AmD to run BTCC MGs for 2018 season

Thursday, January 11 2018

Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship team AmDTuning.com will run the multiple race-winning MG6 GTs this season, doubling its participation in the tin-top series, which gets underway at Brands Hatch on 7/8 April.

The deal to run the two MGs - one of the most successful cars of the NGTC era - will see the team field four cars this year, with Ollie Jackson and rookie Sam Smelt already confirmed in the Audis. The two MG6 GT cars and the licences required to run them in the BTCC have now been transferred to the West Thurrock-based team from Triple Eight, which originally developed and ran the cars from 2012 to 2017.

Since making its return to the BTCC in 2012, MG has won 24 races with the MG6, taken the 2014 Manufacturers' Championship and finished runner-up in the 2013 Drivers' Championship with Jason Plato. The brand has also launched the careers of Sam Tordoff and reigning champion Ashley Sutton.

The decision to expand the BTCC programme will see AmDTuning.com focus solely on touring cars during the year ahead, having run parallel GT programmes for the past three years. Talks with potential drivers to fill the two vacant MG seats are currently ongoing, with further news to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Team boss Shaun Hollamby said: "The BTCC is a fantastic series to be involved in, so when the chance to expand our team and run the MGs this season came up, it was an opportunity we grabbed with both hands. This is a big season for the BTCC as it celebrates its 60th anniversary, and we are delighted that we will be able to play our part with an expanded presence on the grid.

"The MG has been one of the most successful cars of recent seasons, with countless wins and podiums, and we are keen to try and add to that during the year ahead. We have already started work on a development programme with the cars to ensure they are ready and raring to go, and are in talks with a number of potential drivers about filling the two seats.

"Everyone involved with the team is hugely excited by this deal, and we are looking forward to getting the cars out on track and fighting for success on four fronts during the year ahead."
