Oulton Park resurrects famous landmark at Deer Leap

Sunday, August 29 2010

In keeping with the historic theme of the Oulton Park Gold Cup this weekend (29/30 August), the Cheshire circuit has resurrected its own piece of history by re-erecting an historic sign that once stood on the start finish straight from 1953-1966.

Circuit staff Ian Clover and Phil Hosker have been working towards the restoration of the landmark and the sign, which displays the famous Esso logo, makes use of the original post which has been refurbished by a local fabricator.

A new sign has been created using the original artwork supplied by Esso, and the monument has been located as near as possible to the original location.

Phil Hosker is delighted to see the sign back at the circuit; "We're really pleased to be re-erecting a piece of Oulton Park history and honouring the famous drivers that competed here in the past" he said.

At the bottom of the sign is a plinth and brass plaque which faces the spectator area with the following inscription:

This sign originally stood here between 1953 and 1966 and has been re-erected in honour of the drivers who would have passed it while taking the chequered flag to win the Oulton Park Gold Cup.
