Nigel Moore fires opening salvo at Oulton Park

Friday, July 23 2010

Nigel Moore fired an early warning to his championship rivals in the opening free practice session at Oulton Park, the Briton laying down a superb benchmark to finish just under eight tenths of a second clear of the rest of the field.

Chasing his first win in FPA this weekend, Moore's early benchmark time of 1:36.570s eclipsed championship leader Maxime Jousse's best effort, with the Frenchman having to settle for second.

Melroy Heemskerk, who won the opening race of the season at Brands Hatch, finished third fastest, less than two hundredths of a second behind Jousse. The Dutchman experienced one of the only wild moments in what was a remarkably quiet session, running wide at Lodge on his very first tour of the circuit.

Spain's Jose Alonso Liste, currently fifth in the overall standings, continued his fine form to set the fourth fastest lap, exactly one tenth of a second down the road from Heemskerk. Welshman Ash Davies will meanwhile have been buoyed by his early performance as he finished fifth fastest, although his best effort was just over one second slower than Moore.

Behind Davies, Howard Fuller took an impressive sixth, a quarter of a second ahead of Ramon Pineiro in seventh. The Spaniard had looked in typically feisty form, passing Ash Davies on the run down to the first corner, and will be looking to improve in this afternoon's session as he bids to improve upon his current ranking of third in the championship.

Kieron Vernon was only fractions behind Pineiro in eighth, while behind the tightest battle in the field saw Vincent Beltoise, James Thorp and Luca Orlandi separated by just eight hundredths of a second in ninth through to 11th.

That left Callum Holland, who is racing despite suffering from gastric flu in the build up the weekend, in 12th, just over three tenths of a second clear of Giuseppe Ciprinai in 13th. with Mark Powell meanwhile rounded out the field as he re-acclimatises to the FPA machinery in what is his debut round of 2010 this weekend.
