Chilton on a charge at Oulton Park

Saturday, June 05 2010

After scoring his first victory of the season last time out at Brands Hatch, Tom Chilton's Team Aon Ford Focus set the pace once again in the opening free practice session for the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park today (Saturday 5 June).

Chilton topped the timesheets for the majority of the 40 minute session despite new engine restrictions being applied to his LPG-powered car. However, he was closely challenged by a number of drivers including Honda Racing's Gordon Shedden - who came within two thousandth of a second of his Team Aon rival.

Less than three tenths of a second separated the top four drivers, with the WSR BMW of Rob Collard turning in a strong performance to secure third position in the final minutes of free practice ahead of Airwaves BMW's Mat Jackson.

Joint championship leaders Honda Racing's Matt Neal and Silverline Chevrolet's Jason Plato made a solid start to their weekend campaigns, as the pair finished the opening session fifth and eighth respectively. Plato setting an identical time to WSR's Andy Neate, who was classified ninth.

Chilton's team-mate Tom Onslow-Cole secured sixth fastest place, ahead of Chevrolet's Alex MacDowall in seventh, whilst the Triple Eight Vauxhall Vectra of James Nash rounded out the top ten.

There were issues in free practice one for Paul O'Neill, whose Sunshine.co.uk Honda Integra lost a wheel following a nut failure, and Boulevard Racing's Martin Johnson, who experienced brake failure earlier in the session.

This weekend is posing a challenge of a different nature for David Pinkney, who will be piloting his Vauxhall Vectra whilst recovering from a dislocated shoulder after colliding with a Labrador during a game of rounders!

Track activity from the BTCC continues with free practice two at 12.30pm followed by qualifying at 3pm.
