Onslow-Pole for Tom at Oulton Park

Saturday, June 05 2010

His team-mate may have dominated free practice, but it was the Team Aon Ford Focus of Tom Onslow-Cole that clinched pole position in qualifying for the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park today (Saturday).

Jason Plato's Silverline Chevrolet topped the timesheets for the majority of the 30 minute qualifying session, until a flying lap by Tom Onslow-Cole led to the young driver snatching pole position with ten minutes remaining.

"I'm thrilled, and I have to admit, a little bit surprised!" said Onslow-Cole. "The lap didn't feel that quick but it was extremely smooth, despite me pushing really hard throughout. That's often the case though - a more aggressive lap can result in a slower time despite looking quicker. I'm really pleased and obviously aiming for wins tomorrow."

A charging Gordon Shedden, who resided at the sharp end of the field in both free practice sessions, also steered his Honda Racing Civic to a front row start - missing out on pole position by just two thousandths of a second.

Plato had to settle for third place ahead of his team-mate Alex MacDowall, who could have finished even higher up the order had he not encountered traffic during his final flying lap.

After leading both free practice sessions, Onslow-Cole's Team Aon colleague Tom Chilton had to settle for fifth position in qualifying with the WSR BMW of Rob Collard securing sixth.

Plato's fellow championship leader Honda Racing's Matt Neal qualified seventh, with the Sunshine.co.uk-backed Honda Integra of Paul ONeill in eighth - a strong result considering Paul pulled off the circuit with a mechanical problem just ten minutes into the session.

Airwaves BMW's Mar Jackson qualified in ninth place, whilst the Triple Eight Vauxhall Vectra completed the top ten.

Pirtek Racing's Andrew Jordan failed to take part in qualifying after the team was unable to complete an engine change in his Vauxhall Vectra before the end of the session.

Racing action from the BTCC begins tomorrow (Sunday 6 June) at 12.15pm, following a free pit walkabout and driver autograph session from 10.35-11.10am.
