Mat Jackson eyes BTCC Championship lead at Oulton Park

Wednesday, June 01 2011

Airwaves Racing driver Mat Jackson is fired up for a winning performance at the Oulton Park round of the British Touring Car Championship this weekend (4/5 June). The Ford Focus driver is aiming to capitalise on a good start to the BTCC season that sees him in second place in the standings, just 12 points behind leader Matt Neal.

Mat's season got off to a solid start at Brands Hatch and a win at the sixth round at Donington Park confirmed his status as a championship contender, despite switching from a rear-wheel drive BMW and adjusting to a Focus that powers its front axle.

Fine race craft rewarded him with a good points haul at Thruxton, topped by a second place in the third race and it's this consistency, coupled with race-winning speed that leaves him in a position to threaten for overall honours this year.

With recent rule changes capping the performance of turbo-powered cars such as Mat's, the team took the opportunity to test at their local circuit, Brands Hatch, last week. "We're hoping to make some improvements going into Oulton Park and beyond", Mat said during a break in testing. "We are always working away trying to develop the car and move things on, and we are making progress.

"It's a long championship and obviously Matt Neal and the Team Dynamics Honda is the car to beat", Mat continued. "We are going to keep chasing it and if we can get points finishes and podiums we will be happy. I think Oulton will be good, we did a pre-season test there with the car and it went well. We are just hoping we can be challenging for the front in qualifying and have three good races.

"We have been consistent and the team have done a fantastic job preparing the car and we have been lucky staying out of trouble and picking up points. We need to come out of Oulton Park in the same position. We now know where the competition is."

Mat has a special affinity with Oulton Park, as it was here that he scored his first BTCC win: "It was a huge feeling to get that first BTCC win at Oulton Park in 2007", said Mat, "and to hold off Jason Plato for the whole race was brilliant. It was great for myself and the team and for everybody who put their faith in us. Oulton Park is one of my favourite circuits on the BTCC calendar and let's hope we can make it win number 14 on Sunday!"
