Shedden heads Honda 1-2 in BTCC qualifying at Oulton Park

Saturday, June 04 2011

Gordon Shedden secured pole position for round 10 of the British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park today, heading an all Honda Racing front row with team-mate Matt Neal.

The Hondas set their times early in qualifying and as Neal set a lap faster than any of this morning's sessions could produce, Shedden came round seconds later with a blistering performance. As the clock continued to tick, it was clear that no-one would be able to match their times.

An early shock was the form of AON's Andy Neate, who posted the third fastest time, three-tenths off the pace of the nearest Honda. Jason Plato tried his hardest to displace the Ford Focus but fell short by four thousandths of a second, putting paid to any thoughts that the Silverline Chevrolets were sand-bagging during the morning sessions.

Andrew Jordan will start on row three, the Pirtek Vauxhall driver in a good position to add to a points tally that sees him sitting fourth in the table going into this weekend's rounds. He sits ahead of Neate's team-mate Tom Chilton and behind them will line up Alex MacDowell. However an off at Druids will give his Silverline team a busy afternoon repairing damage to his car.

Further incidents to Airwaves team mates Liam Griffin and Mat Jackson brought out a red flag with two minutes to run and with oil left on the circuit from the former, there was no choice but to end the session. Jackson at least will start tenth, with Paul O'Neill and James Nash lining up ahead of his Focus. The gap between the top ten is just over one second, suggesting a competitive field despite the pace of the Hondas.

Round ten of the 2011 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship takes place at 12:15 tomorrow (Sunday 4 June)
