BTCC racer Tom Boardman expects good fortune from Oulton Park

Friday, May 20 2011

British Touring Car Championship driver Tom Boardman is aiming to repeat his maiden podium success in the previous round when the series visits Oulton Park next month (4/5 June). The SEAT racer feels that he is due some much-needed luck from the Cheshire track.

Preston-based Boardman was on course for second place at his local circuit last year, after leading most of the race, but retired with steering arm failure one lap after being overtaken by Honda's Matt Neal.

Boardman said: "Last year was very disappointing and yes, you could say that Oulton Park does owe me one. I'm not expecting too much - I just want to score good points and if I can get onto the podium or in the top five places in all three races, I'll be happy."

With a podium under his belt, Boardman wants to continue making up lost ground in the championship now his Special Tuning Racing team has solved reliability issues that stymied its progress earlier in the season. With the team expanding to a two-car effort now that reigning Clio Cup champion Dave Newsham has joined in a second SEAT Leon, the 27-year old is optimistic.

Boardman added: "The first two rounds of the season were gutting because I lost a lot of ground in the standings. There's still a long way to go in the championship, but I want to start making up some of that lost ground now.

"We'll have two cars on the grid at Oulton. Dave should be strong out of the blocks and I want him to be quick so we can swap times and share data," explained Boardman. "My opinion has always been that getting input from another driver will definitely help me and the team take strides forward with the car."
