Lynn fastest for Fortec in British F3 practice at Oulton Park

Friday, April 06 2012

Alex Lynn was comfortably fastest in the first practice session of the 2012 British Formula 3 season at Oulton Park today (Friday). The Briton was half a second clear of Puerto Rican team mate Felix Serralles and compatriot Jack Harvey.

The cars lined up in the pitlane ready to go as soon as the track opened and first time round Pietro Fantin took initial honours, fastest from Carlos Sainz Jr and Fahmi Ilyas, but the margin was less than a tenth. As Pipo Derani joined in the action, the pair traded times for a short while, before Harry Tincknell, Serralles and Hannes Van Asseldonk promoted themselves to the top of the table, the latter breaking the 90 second barrier.

Jazeman Jaafar found another half second with a quarter of the session gone and with Serralles getting close to setting a 1:28 second lap, the Malaysian was inspired to break into this bracket. Harvey then went one thousandth faster, which was beaten next time round by Jaafar, two tenths quicker.

The home trio of Tincknell, Harvey and Lynn bettered their own times halfway through the session, with the latter, in his debut season of British F3 competition, taking a tenth off the headline time. This prompted a hive of activity in the pitlane, as the drivers readied themselves for the final 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, Serralles and Van Asseldonk were taking hundredths out of Lynn's time, as thoughts turned to the afternoon's qualifying session. Lynn, mighty in the final sector, claimed fastest middle sector time too on his next tour and reduced the target time by three tenths, which was then bettered on the following two laps, to put him almost seven tenths clear.

Harvey was first to attempt a response in the final ten minutes but his first effort merely took a mere tenth off the gap. Serralles then reduced the deficit to half a second but no further threats were on the horizon and as the clock counted down, it was the reigning Formula Renault UK champion that topped the timesheet.

Behind Serralles and Harvey, Tincknell claimed the fourth fastest time, six tenths in arrears, whilst Van Asseldonk and Fantin headed a subdued Sainz Jr, who ran in the top ten for most of the session. Early pacesetter Jaafar took eighth, ahead of Derani and Ilyas.

The qualifying session takes place at 14:15 today.
