Serralles makes it 2-1 to Fortec at Oulton Park

Saturday, April 07 2012

Felix Serralles has won the third Cooper Tires British Formula 3 Championship race at Oulton Park today (Saturday). The Puerto Rican completed a good day for the Fortec team after Carlin had dominated pre-season testing. However Carlin's Jack Harvey finished second and leads the championship after the opening round.

Race three started in fine afternoon sunshine as Harvey lined up on pole position from Serralles. The latter made the best start from the lights and raced around the outside of Harvey at Old Hall to lead. However with race two winner Derani unable to get away from the grid, the safety car was scrambled before the leader had completed a lap.

Behind Harvey, Harry Tincknell led Carlos Sainz Jr, Jazeman Jaafar, Alex Lynn, Pietro Fantin, Hannes Van Asseldonk, Fahmi Ilyas and Nick McBride. Two laps later, Serralles made a textbook restart as Tincknell came under attack.

With most of the 40 minute race length remaining, the race settled down as Serralles eked out a small lead over Harvey. Van Asseldonk left the circuit at Druids from eighth place as Harvey and Tincknell posted quick sector times, dropping Sainz in fourth as Jaafar sized him up.

Harvey's efforts were drawing him closer to the leader, who was visibly more ragged in his attempts to protect his place. However Serralles regained his composure, unlike Sainz, who was gaining and losing time in equal measure to his opponents. If Jaafar was within striking distance, however, the presence of Lynn behind was tempering his enthusiasm.

At the halfway stage the race at the front split into two camps - the three leaders and the battle between Sainz, Jaafar, Lynn and Fantin behind. Sainz felt that he'd rather be in the first group and he focussed upon the battle ahead of him, leaving Jaafar behind. Tincknell's podium position certainly looked under threat as he started to fall back from the leading pace.

As Sainz drew within three seconds of Tincknell, the Briton got the message and increased his pace. As the final laps approached there appeared to be little anyone could do, although Harvey continued to put the leader under pressure. Their pace left Tincknell and Sainz behind, whilst Jaafar, Lynn and Fantin held station. Behind them, Fantin, Ilyas, Nick McBride and Geoff Uhrhane completed the top ten, despite late pressure from National Class leader Spike Goddard.
