Ferraris to the fore at Oulton Park as Mtech head GT practice

Saturday, April 07 2012

The Mtech Ferrari 458 Italia of Duncan Cameron and Matt Griffin headed the times in first practice for this weekend's British GT season opener at Oulton Park today (Saturday). The tem faced a challenge from the older 430 of the Predator team and Rosso Verde's 548.

Mtech and Preci-Spark were the first teams to post competitive times as the session got underway in damp conditions, following overnight rain. Two of the Trackspeed Porsches and one of the Lotus Sport cars joined them in the sub-two minute bracket, however the sister Evora had stopped at the chicane and this brought out the red flag after barely ten minutes had run.

After the resumption of track activity, the times started to tumble as the tyres started to displace water from the tarmac. Mtech were first under 1:50 seconds and the older Predator Ferrari, unhindered by the conditions shaved three tenths off this time.

Also performing well at this time were the Motorbase Porsches, running fourth and fifth behind the Rosso Verde Ferrari. They headed the revived Ecurie Ecosse team, running a BMW Z4. Meanwhile in GT4, the WFR Ginetta was battling with the Lotus Sport Evora for honours.

After the initial rush for lap times, the session settled down, with teams working throughout the pitlane on setups. With the weekend forecast predicting rain, getting a good base for damp conditions would be crucial.

Aside from a quick first sector from the Rosso Verde team, no headline times were attempted in the final half hour, therefore they remained third, from Mtech and Predator. Both Motorbase entries headed the number 31 Trackspeed Porsche, with Ecurie Ecosse separating it from the number 33 example. Preci-Spark and Scuderia Vittoria completed the top ten, whilst the WFR Ginetta headed the Lotus Sport Evora in the GT4 class. Practice two takes place at 11:50.
