Marshals sample life on the other side of the Armco at Oulton Park

Tuesday, January 24 2012

Oulton Park held its annual Marshals' trackday last Friday (20 January), in conjunction with Club MSV. The event was a huge success, despite the best attempts of the British winter weather!

Every year MSV hold free of charge trackdays across their four venues to reward the continuing efforts of Marshals. From starting races to policing sporting regulations, assisting in vehicle recovery, ensuring the safety of competitors and maintaining track conditions, their hard work is carried out in all conditions, from driving rain to blazing sunshine.

As ever, the event proved to be highly popular and there was a superb range of cars taking to the circuit. Amongst the usual suspects, drivers may have been a little surprised to see a Land Rover Defender on track. The owner, Ian Briggs, is more usually found behind the Armco poised for action. "Oulton Park is a great track," said Ian. "I marshal at tracks all around the country and it's right up there. I was in a bit of a strange vehicle and the day was better in the wet for me as with the Land Rover I was able to slide it round more!

"All the comments on the marshal's website are good," Briggs continued. "I haven't heard a bad thing from anybody. Everyone seemed to enjoy the day - even those who would have preferred it dry. I've even had a good response from the Land Rover website, where I've posted some photographs!"

Club MSV's Nick Rice said: "Marshals are an essential part of all of MSV's activities and we hold these annual trackdays as a thank you to them for their continuing hard work. It's also a great opportunity for them to experience life on the other side of the Armco. We'd have some great feedback about Friday's event and hope that this has energised the Marshals for the coming season."
