Maini marches through the rain to win Oulton F4 race two

Saturday, July 19 2014

Lanan Racing's Arjun Maini claimed his second win of the season with a controlled drive in a wet second race of the weekend at Oulton Park this morning (Saturday).

Maini started second but passed pole sitter Tom Jackson mid way round the first racing lap, and then proceded to stretch out a comfortable margin, with Raoul Hyman taking second from seventh on the grid and Will Palmer third for HHC Motorsport.

Struan Moore claimed fourth for Lanan Racing, ahead of Mark Godwin Racing's Chris Middlehurst and championship leader George Russell in sixth. Gustavo Lima was seventh for Hillspeed ahead of SWR's Nicolas Beer, with Diego Menchaca and Rahul Mayer completing the top-10.

The race started behind the Safety Car with the track extremely wet after heavy rain this morning. Jackson led the first half of the opening lap from pole but was passed at the Hislops chicane by Maini.

As Maini pulled away, Jackson was forced to mount a defensive drive, holding off a pack of three cars across the line starting lap three, with Palmer, Sennan Fielding and and Moore swarming all over him.

Fielding found his way past into second place on lap three, while Hyman, starting from seventh, was up to third with Jackson down to fourth and holding up Palmer.

Palmer found his way past on lap four, with Moore, Chris Middlehurst and Russell also following suit as Jackson dropped to eighth.

At the front, Fielding had begun to cut into Maini's lead, but lost time on lap seven and was forced to pit, promoting Hyman and Palmer into second and third, while Fielding eventually resumed, a lap down.

Meanwhile, pole sitter Jackson dropped out of the race after sliding into the gravel at the Island hairpin on lap eight.

With the track drying gradually, Maini was able to pull out a lead of over four seconds to clinch his second victory of the season, while Hyman's drive from seventh to second cuts Russell's lead at the top of the championship standings to 20 points.

Russell was unable to match the progress of title rival Hyman, and gained two places in the race to take sixth but a long way clear of Hillspeed's Lima who similarly gained two places from his starting position.

Nicolas Beer gained three places to finish eighth for Sean Walkinshaw Racing, while an impressive drive from Mayer saw him take 10th from 16th at the start. Mayer had originally finished 14th in race one, but received a 10 second time penalty this morning for an incident in the race, and had to start 16th for today's contest.

The race, held in wet conditions throughout, was the first wet main season F4 race.

Speaking after the race, Maini commented: "I really enjoy these conditions, and at this track especially. We did some testing here last week in the rain and it's paid off!
