Bumper Super Touring grid set to wow Oulton Park BTCC crowd

Thursday, May 08 2014

The grid for this June's (7/8) Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship-supporting Super Touring Trophy is set to be the biggest since the formula's late-90s peak, with at least 22 cars confirmed for the much-anticipated one-off appearance on the bill.

Honda's recent domination of the BTCC will extend to the ranks of the Super Touring Trophy, with several 90s Accord models added. Joining Thruxton pole-sitter James Dodd and Stewart Whyte will be Oulton regular Ric Wood. The Stockport-based driver will be entering a 1997 Prodrive-built Accord, from the era of James Thompson and Gabriele Tarquini.

Tarquini was replaced by Peter Kox at the Honda squad for 1998 and Max Goff is expected to confirm his participation with the Dutchman's car from that year.

Meanwhile a 1996 MSD car will appear in the hands of Alex Schooledge. That season provided the Japanese marque's breakthrough victory in the modern era with the late David Leslie at the wheel.

The Hondas are expected to be joined by classic cars from the 80s and 90s including the Sierra Cosworths and BMW M3s, plus Renault Lagunas, Alfa Romeos and Nissan Primeras. The entry will also include double BTCC champion John Cleland in his 1998 Vauxhall Vectra.

Speaking to Autosport magazine, series organiser Dave Jarman confirmed that the races will be a highlight of the event: "We've got 22 Super Tourers entered. It'll be one of the biggest Super Touring grids since the day."
