Plato resists Flash attack to win again at Oulton Park

Sunday, June 07 2015

Jason Plato denied Gordon Shedden the win in a photo finish to the second Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship race at Oulton Park today (Sunday), which ended in high drama with two of the three WSR BMWs colliding on the final lap.

A slow start for Shedden gave Plato an unchallenged run into Old Hall, as further behind, Rob Collard found plenty of traction to pass team-mate Andy Priaulx for fourth place behind Andrew Jordan. Matt Neal assumed fifth place ahead of Aron Smith, Adam Morgan, Jeff Smith and Sam Tordofff.

Success ballast following the race one win meant that Plato was driving a heavy car, and Shedden exploited this to catch the VW and hassle it during the opening laps. Jordan and Collard hung on behind, as the leading quartet ran clear of the rest.

Plato drove ever more defensively as the race progressed, and this bunched up the field once again. Whilst Shedden was planning his attack, Aron Smith, Morgan and Tordoff fought over seventh place, and the Mercedes and BMW passed the VW on lap eleven, whilst just behind them, Colin Turkington had hauled his way up to tenth place and was on his team-mate's tail.

The leader picked up a little pace in the closing laps, as Jordan came under increasing attack from Collard. But the BMW fell into the clutches of WSR team-mate Andy Priaulx and the pair collided on the final lap on the approach to the hairpin. This deranged Collard's suspension and delayed Priaulx, who eventually finished in 15th place.

Up front, Shedden got a great exit out of Lodge and challenged Plato on the run to the line. The pair finished the race side-by-side, with Plato just edging Shedden by 0.093 seconds. Jordan took the final podium place, with Neal promoted to fourth after the WSR mix-up, which left Tordoff as the team's highest-placed finisher in fifth.

Race three will take place at 5:42pm.
