Huge entry to contest Oulton Park vintage races this Saturday

Thursday, May 19 2016

Over 200 vintage and classic cars will take to the picturesque Oulton Park circuit at this Saturday's (21 May) Vintage Festival, a list that spans six decades of a pioneering age of motorsport.

The oldest car set to compete is a 1909 De Dietrich 130 HP 'Course' with an impressive 16-litre engine in the pre-war scratch race. It will compete against machinery from the 1920s and 30s, including British Austins, Rileys, Wolseleys and ERAs, as well as exotic Bugattis from across the continent.

Machinery from the inter-war years will also compete in other races, with entries including rarities from Alta, Bentley, Frazer Nash, Jaguar SS, Lagonda, MG and Railton. Others include a coveted Aston Martin Ulster and a Kurtis Indy-Roadster, racing just a week before the 100th edition of the Indy 500.

There are also races for post-WW II cars, including the 500cc F3 category that was the birthplace of modern British motorsport success. The class nurtured great talents including Sir Stirling Moss and the Cooper Car Company that later ushered in the rear-engined F1 cars, and there's a strong contingent of Charles and John's creations.

The Historic Racing Drivers Club will also be holding two races for cars from the 1950s and 60s, with the newest being a mere 50-years-old. There's a huge Austin A35 entry that includes two British Touring Car Champions; John Cleland and Andrew Jordan, the latter appearing just two weeks before the modern-day series returns to Cheshire.

Andrew's dad Mike will also be competing in an Austin A40, whilst rock star Chris Rea completes the celebrity element in a police-liveried Morris Minor. Other machinery includes Mini Coopers, Lotus Elans, MGs and Fords.

The event also includes a race for the popular Morgan 3-Wheelers and there's a wealth of off-track activities, including huge vintage and classic car displays, an biplane air display, static display Spitfire with Merlin engine demonstrations, Pimm's and cream teas tent, funfair and live jazz music.
