Local BTCC hero Adam Morgan eyes title lead at Oulton

Tuesday, May 31 2016

Blackburn's Adam Morgan is aiming for the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship title lead in front of his local fans at Oulton Park this weekend (4/5 June), with just three points separating him from the top of the standings.

"It's been a great start," Adam said. "At Brands and Thruxton we've had wins, and we're the first to get two wins this year. If I'd have had a slightly better Donington we could be leading the championship."

In addition to those two wins, a series of strong finishes have kept the 27-year-old in the thick of the title fight. "I think when I got that DNF at Donington it was my first in about 41 races," he said. "If I can just keep this up and score more points at every round, I'm going to be in with a really good shout."

Adam's family-run WIX Racing squad is competing against the might of works Honda and MG teams as well as established outfits such as WSR and Motorbase. New parts for this year have helped level the playing field, and this has possibly helped keep his Mercedes A-Class at the front of the pack.

"Everyone got the components in the same amount of time," Adam said. "But we've got Marco who's a brilliant engineer, extremely experienced. I think everyone's doing very well on these new components, we just have to keep our heads down and hopefully we can stay ahead of the game."

One team which could provide WIX Racing and sister team Laser Tools Racing with further headaches is the works Subaru outfit. Whilst they've struggled so far with the radical new Levorg, Adam thinks it's a matter of time before they'll be on the pace, perhaps this weekend.

"They've got Colin and Jason driving, and Carl [Faux], who's a very experienced engineer," he said. "Being rear-wheel-drive they'll be quick around Oulton, and they've had this new upgrade as well, so we just need to be ready for them."

If the Subarus come back stronger, then Adam will need the support of his home crowd to help him conquer his rivals. "It's always nice coming to your local one," he said. "You look around the paddock and people will name places that you're familiar with, and I always seem to get a load of family show up who I've never met before but will appear; your uncle shows up, but he's not really your uncle, he got drunk with your dad one night when you were really young! It's lovely and as Oulton is always of the busiest events it makes it special.

"I think we've got a good car and there's no reason why we shouldn't be at the front, and if we get on the podium or a win it would be amazing."

Tickets for the BTCC at Oulton Park on 4/5 June are available in advance from £27, with free entry for under-13s. For more information, call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
