Simpson surprises with sensational BTCC Oulton Park pole

Saturday, June 09 2018

Matt Simpson claimed his maiden BTCC pole position with a stunning lap at Oulton Park this afternoon (Saturday) that left him well clear of the opposition.

The Honda Civic driver set his best time on just his fourth lap of the session, and followed up his earlier practice form, which saw him top the times this morning. With the top-24 drivers covered by less than a second, Simpson's pole, by almost a quarter of a second was one of the largest gaps between any driver in the field.

The 36-year-old will be aiming to take his first podium in race one tomorrow, with his best BTCC result to date being a pair of seventh places at the Brands Hatch season opener.

Sam Tordoff was second quickest in the Motorbase Ford Focus, just ahead of teammate Tom Chilton, with Andrew Jordan the top BMW driver in fourth.

Matt Neal in fifth headed a trio of Honda Civics, with Neal's newer model 0.051s clear of the older version of Jack Goff, with Goff's teammate Brett Smith seventh and 0.024s behind.

Local man James Cole was eighth, 0.007s behind Smith, with Colin Turkington ninth and Tom Oliphant completing the top-10.

2017 champion Ashley Sutton was the top Subaru driver in 15th, with Jason Plato's difficult season continuing, with the series legend only managing the 29th best time.

The opening BTCC race of the weekend starts at 12.20 tomorrow afternoon (Sunday).
