Proctor and Fawcett claim Oulton Park rally spoils as O'Neill stars

Sunday, November 05 2017

Kevin Procter and co-driver Derrick Fawcett successfully defended their Neil Howard Stages Rally title at Oulton Park yesterday (Saturday), the opening round of the 2017/18 Motorsport News Circuit Rally Championship.

The pairing carried the coveted number 1 on their Ford Fiesta R5 and used this to great effect, immediately recording times at the front of the pace. They were challenged by a number of crews, most closely by the similar car of Steve Simpson and Patrick Walsh. D1 class contenders Chris West/Patrick Walsh (Peugeot 306 Maxi) and Mark Kelly/Andy Baker (Ford Escort MkII) fought for third place, which was won by the Peugeot crew.

Event sponsor Graham Coffey was also in contention for overall victory in the Ford Fiesta WRC he shared with Victoria Myers, whilst in sixth place was the C class-winning Darrian T90 of Joshua and Tamsyn Davey. However a ten-second penalty for missing a chicane on stage nine cost them two places on the leaderboard.

The event took place on a variety of layouts that incorporated sections of the track in both directions, plus pits, paddock and access roads. The event also included a spectacular water splash.

British Touring Car Championship commentator Paul O'Neill enjoyed his first full stage rally, having been forced to retire on stage one of last year's event. He completed the course in the MX-5 he shared with Motorsport News reporter Jack Benyon in 25th place overall and an impressive second in class B, just two seconds behind Ben and Andrew Wilkinson's Citroen Saxo. O'Neill tweeted: "Mega time @Oulton_Park. ABSOLUTELY have the bug for rallying now!" Fellow BTCC racer Adam Morgan finished in 34th place.

In addition to the rally, there was a host of off-track activities, including rally rides and drives in the venue's Toyota GT86 rally cars, plus children's entertainment and a spectacular stunt driving show from Paul Swift.

The event, which is the last to be held at Oulton Park this season, ended with a 'big bang' fireworks display.
