Stellar 270+ entry list revealed for Oulton Park Gold Cup

Friday, July 22 2022

A superb entry list of more than 270 retro racing cars has been confirmed for Oulton Park's signature Historic Gold Cup meeting next weekend (29-31 July). From classic Grand Prix cars which contested the original International Gold Cup in period, to 1960s touring cars and fire-breathing modified saloons, there will be plenty to see across a busy three-day programme.

This year's 'Historic Gold Cup' races will be contested by the Historic Grand Prix Car Association, with a full field of classically-modelled open-wheel race cars from yesteryear. Machinery from Maserati, Lotus, Cooper and more will share the spotlight in two races with a capacity grid of 34 cars expected to take to the picturesque International circuit on Saturday and Sunday.

Another capacity entry will come from the 'Jim Clark Cup' Historic Formula Junior races, which recall the early years of junior single-seater racing both in the UK and abroad. The Historic Formula Junior races form part of the Historic Sports Car Club's handpicked offering for the major retro showcase.

Other HSCC highlights will include the 'Griffiths Haig Trophy' for 1950s sports cars and sports-racing cars, which will make its Oulton Park debut with a strong line-up. Over 20 GT and sports-racing cars from the '60s will star in the 'Guards Trophy', the first event of the weekend, whilst powerful single-seaters will be order of the day in the 'Niki Lauda Trophy' Formula 2 race and the 'Derek Bell Trophy' for '70s open-wheel cars.

This year's event features a heavily revised race line-up with several specially curated categories appearing for the first time. Amongst these is the 'Jack Sears Trophy' for pre-'66 touring cars as raced in the early years of the British Saloon Car Championship, now BTCC. This popular series from the Historic Racing Drivers Club has attracted a bumper entry of 37 tin tops and is expected to be a real crowd pleaser on the Saturday.

Fans of retro saloon car racing are in for even more thrills at this year's event, with the 'Alan Mann Trophy' for the Masters Pre-'66 Touring Cars taking place a day later. This is the first time Masters Historic Racing has joined the HSCC Gold Cup bill and its Gentlemen Drivers category will also feature when more than 20 '60s GT cars contest the 'Cheshire Historic TT'.

Another exciting addition to the line-up this year is the 'Tony Sugden Trophy' for Special Saloons and Modsports from the Classic Sports Car Club. 28 of these fast and wild machines have been entered for a Sunday double-bill, including 'Baby Bertha' the Dealer Team Vauxhall Firenza famously raced by Gerry Marshall in the 1970s.

Cars from the 1920s and '30s will have a chance to shine at this year's Gold Cup too, with two races organised by the Vintage Sports-Car Club. The 'Egerton Cup' and 'Range Corner Trophy' will both place an emphasis on cars from motorsport's early pioneering years and eclectic selection of cars is anticipated for both.
