Byrne takes pole for Bennetts BSB Bank Holiday bike bonanza!

Sunday, May 06 2018

Bennetts British Superbike Championship title-holder Shane 'Shakey' Byrne starts tomorrow's race in pole position after topping today's qualifying ahead of Jake Dixon and teammate Glenn Irwin. The six-time champion says he's happy to be in the front row but thinks high temperatures make setting a new track record unlikely.

"My rhythm is really, really good compared to pretty much everyone else but I wasn't sure whether or not we could go that extra bit for qualifying because the hot track temperatures just got the tyres moving around and it's like riding on like chewing gum.

"I did a pretty good time in qualifying practice two and there was probably a little bit more in there, and I matched my time from last year which was in far better conditions. Will the lap record go tomorrow? I'm not so sure, but I couldn't care less to be honest as long as we're somewhere near the front."

Championship leader Bradley Ray starts in ninth place after ending up in the gravel at Lodge. The top 14 riders in today's second period of qualifying were separated by less than a second, but Byrne says he doesn't think tomorrow's racing will be as close.

"There's plenty of guys that will set their bike up and be able to hold their breath and be able to do a lap time but the problem is there's two 18-lap races. You can hold your breath for a minute and thirty-odd seconds but try doing it for 25 minutes and you'll be off into the Armco somewhere.

"It's going to be two tough races tomorrow and apparently the forecast is even hotter, which I think is good for Glenn and myself especially. If we can get out there and drink plenty of water before we go then we should be alright."

Gates open at 7am tomorrow and adult admission is £34, with discounts for teens (13-15) and senior citizens. Kids under 13 go FREE! For more information click here.
