BTCC Qualifying: Ingram grabs pole at Oulton Park with lap record

Saturday, June 11 2022

Tom Ingram claimed his first Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship pole position of the season at Oulton Park this afternoon (Saturday), with a new qualifying lap record.

The Hyundai driver set his best lap of 1m25.468s 20 minutes into the session, which was red flagged twice. His fastest time was almost two tenths of a second faster than Rory Butcher, who put his locally-prepared Toyota Corolla second with his lap just a couple of minutes before the first stoppage, caused by Rick Parfitt's broken down Infiniti with five minutes remaining.

The session resumed with an additional five minutes on the clock, and while the top two couldn't be beaten, Ingram's teammate Daniel Lloyd took full advantage to go third with his last lap, just 0.060s away from the front row and a hundredth of a second faster than the Ciceley Motorsport BMW of Adam Morgan.

Reigning champion Ashley Sutton put his NAPA Racing Ford Focus ST in fifth place, just over a quarter of a second away from pole with a late lap of his own.

Practice pace-setter Daniel Rowbottom was sixth in qualifying, 0.043s behind Sutton and 0.012s ahead of the second Ford Focus of Daniel Cammish.

Rowbottom's teammate Gordon Shedden was half a tenth further back in eighth place and ahead of BMW's Colin Turkington, with current championship leader Josh Cook, running without any hybrid power boost in the session as a result of leading the standings, completing the top-10 and within half a second of pole.

The top-21 drivers were within a second of the pace, with the session coming to a premature halt when the second red flag was called when Aiden Moffat's Infiniti came to a halt at Island bend.

Ingram's new qualifying lap record is 0.016s faster than the previous benchmark, set by Jason Plato in 2015.

The first Kwik Fit BTCC race of the weekend is due to start at 12.20 tomorrow (Sunday).
